"St. Paul deserves a new day, a new vision, a new choice, a new chance to dream, a new leader."

Anika's Story, Our Story

Family

I was born and raised in Saint Paul with over 100 years of family history rooted in the historic Rondo neighborhood. I am the only daughter and big sister to three amazing brothers born to a mother and father who were hard working business owners. I grew up packing groceries for loyal customers at Pyramid Market, our family owned food market near Selby and Dale Street. My neighborhood had big  families who would host big cookouts in the park and organize basketball tournaments for everyone to join. There never was a boring moment growing up in the heart of Saint Paul, a vibrant city that valued diversity and welcomed immigrants.

Loss

As a young black woman I faced violence, poverty, and injustice. I watched my neighborhood lose many people to drug addiction, gun violence, and prison. I lost my father to the criminal justice system. At countless city council district hearings, I watched my mother fight to for us to afford to live in our home. Her voice was left unheard and my brothers and I were left homeless. With my family spread all across the city, we understood the need for public transportation and public housing. Saint Paul Public Libraries and Recreation Centers became our place of refuge while we worked to restore our lives.

Leadership

I committed to service leadership around the age of 16. Art was my weapon of change. My proudest moment at Central High School was performing my story to thousands of students across the state with Central Touring Theater. Continuing the fight for justice, I received a Bachelors degree from Hamline University in Criminal Justice. Today, I carry the torch of civil rights as Vice President of Minneapolis NAACP. With the support of Mayor Melvin Carter, I currently serve on the Saint Paul Police Civilian Internal Affairs Review Commission. For over a decade, I have dedicated my career to advocating for families and helping government restore relationships with community.
